Lakeside Modern Cottage

We are happy to report that our Lakeside Modern Cottage is actively underway in Unionville, IN on the northside of Lake Lemon.  You have to see the before shots of this complete transformation (we will be sharing soon).  Our clients are really having fun with the project and totally going for it not just with the design concepts, but with the details and materials, too!  We are so lucky to be able to work on modern dream homes every day (design + construction)!

Modern Lakehouse Giant Kitchen Island Installation

Modern Lakehouse at Lake Clearwater in Indianapolis construction progress is coming along meticulously.  This week the new giant modern kitchen island took steps toward on-site completion.  This kitchen is going to be incredible thanks to the design team (HAUS) and the most excellent kitchen cabinet-maker (John Hartman with Cabinetry Green out of Fishers).  The new kitchen is centered on the new south-facing dormer indicated in this photo.  Dormer and window trims will be painted dark grey/black to compliment what will be a black back counter and cabinetry.  The island finish is predominantly white oak with gloss white cabinet doors and a white quartz top.  The tower cabinets on the far wall include built-in refrigerator and appliance garage concealed by hinge-slide doors.

Framing Progress @Copperwood Speeds Forward

Recent Framing Progress @ Copperwood includes completion of main level floor decking and heavy timber columns.  Seven-person crew is making short work of it.  This week we received delivery of steel columns for main west-side canopy + special lumber order from American Pole & Timber which includes the 32′ long treated true 2×12 roof rafters and the timber for front entry bridge and extended Airstream canopy.  We expect shell to be weathered-in by late February 2016.  See project portfolio here.

WERK’s mini bar, “Bar-Wall Wardrobe” gets mention at #37.  This mini-bar is built-into the wall and features an industrial design aesthetic, utilizing steel inset bar with acrylic, back-lighted rear, and steel pipe extrusions to hold bottles.  This detail was an extension of the entry sequence featuring other insets and details, including 10′ tall steel barn doors.

Copperwood Ground Breaking

Copperwood Ground Breaking – construction is underway in Zionsville on this Dwell-inspired site-specific home designed by HAUS | Architecture For Modern Lifestyles.  Unique features include Airstream porte-cochere + Airstream acting as Home Office and Guest Suite and table tennis arena in the lower level.

The design is a balance of energy-efficiency and client goals/budget expectations for this particular location and this particular site.  You cannot see this project from any public street, as it is buried on a heavily-wooded 12-acre plot filled with habitat and some wetlands.  Please stay-tuned for updates on the particulars of this project as the construction progresses in 2016!

Check out Copperwood portfolio for the latest renderings and progress photos.

Modular vs Site-Built Debate

We are saving this article for future reference – Modular vs Site-Built construction techniques.  What can the United States learn from European Modular Construction Techniques?

In two provocative pieces, here and here, George Casey looks at the “200-year-old industry unimpeded by progress” as necessarily ready and ripe for technological and automation platforms as solutions for chronic labor and skills shortages, and unmanageable costs.
